The contest began with both teams at emotional peaks. RCHS guard Jeff Porter started Rapp off with a drive for two from the opening tip but William Monroe came right back with a three point play to claim the lead. It never belonged to the Panthers again.
Rappahannock let the margin steadily widen. On their possessions, the Panthers threw the ball up too hard and, on target or not, it would not fall through the hoop. The RCHS cold snap led the Dragons to a 15-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
William Monroe set off the second quarter by scoring immediately. But the Panthers weren’t about to fold yet. They tried and tried to take the lead back, cutting the margin to the lowest of the night. Monroe scored 16 points to Rapp’s 15 but still maintained a seven point, 31-24, lead at the half.
