Wilkins said other schools include the movie in 10th grade biology classes, but that she could also see it fitting into Rappahannock’s health classes, adding that the county already uses a “remarkable” book, “Health and Safety For You”, which could be a companion piece to the film.
Chappell said he would anticipate breaking the showing up into two or three lessons to allow each class ample discussion time after seeing portions of the movie. “We’re not just planning to show it and forget it,” he said.
Wilkins and Chappell both asked the audience to react to the film and say whether they thought it should be used. “It’s better than ‘Dallas’,” said one parent. “It will start them thinking.”
“The thinking is already going on, folks,” answered Chappell. “It’s more controlled thinking. For some, it’s too late.”
Wilkins said she supported showing the film because she was “tired of talking to 11, 12 (year-olds who are pregnant) who say ’I didn't think it would happen to me.’ ”
Another parent urged starting the film in the lowest grade and showing it to the 8th graders first. And a recent RCHS graduate who was in the audience said, “I think it should be showed. They’re doing it because their friends say, “Come out. we’re doing it.’ There’s more pressure nowadays. You should start in the 8th grade.”
“We see it as possible prevention of the types of problems” teens face, Chappell said, asserting that the movie could be used in connection with discussions not just concerning sexuality, but also drugs and alcohol and any kind of difficult decision making where there might be strong peer pres- j sure to contradict parents’ ! standards. :
