fancy bookmarks “to be constructed from anything.” The most original will be displayed on the doors of all classrooms.
Other plans included trimming a Christmas tree with handmade book covers, posting charts in the halls on which pupils grade the books they’ve read on a scale of A-F, and “Book Slogan Week.” A winning slogan to encourage reading will be chosen in each classroom and these were to be read last week during the morning announcements.
The last 20 minutes of each Thursday during the month was to be “read in peace” time (RIP), Piper said. On Fridays, each teacher was to devote time to reading a favorite story to the class.
High school librarian Elizabeth Scott said the reading lab classes would participate in oral interpretation and dramatics during Virginia Reading Month and the English classes would participate in RIP (read in peace) such as at the elementary school. Scott said certain times during the English classes will be designated for RIP at the teachers’ discretion.
Other activities include a book exchange at the library where students may trade old books for others which were donated for that purpose. Also the FHS club is sponsoring a reading period at the kindergarten. Club members would read to the younger children at least once during December, Scott said.
