Congratulations to James Grigsby! He’s Castleton’s new fire chief starting the first of January. Last week the department also re-elected Louise as captain, Jimmy Cannon treasurer, Marty Cannon secretary and John Wayne Settle president.
Sadie and Carroll Fox recently returned from a trip to the southern states. They went to Kentucky and Tennessee to see relatives. Sunday they visited Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Fox, Jr., at Annandale, and ended up helping to sell Christmas trees to raise money for their church.
Speaking of trees, Aunt Michele has a wild cedar from the backwoods of Castleton. It’s a gift from a friend who turned her loose on the property with no native guide. She took along seven-year-old Tracy Hitt to choose and mother Judy to chop — and such an adventure! First they waded across a cold, cold river; then they climbed over a barbed wire fence; then they walked up the side of a mountain dodging thorns the whole time. They quickly found the right tree and cut it, but the return trip with tree held high was equally perilous. Then they had to drag it through a cow pasture being careful to avoid unwanted decorations, tie it into the car and speed through the mud (so as not to get stuck) to the main road and back to their host’s house. But the tree is beautiful and well worth the extra effort. That Cat likes to sleep with his nose near the tree at night and dream he’s deep in the wild woods.
J. T. says Donna Sheads and Wallie and Dorenda came over for theirs Sunday evening. They wouldn’t have any other kind than a homegrown Castleton Christmas tree.
