The course mark has been established for the 7.3 mile Turkey Ridge Run that went off from the Castleton fire hall for the first time on December 3. Paul Baltatisof Vint Hill Farms now holds the record in 42 minutes and 23 seconds.
Frank Reynolds, Rappahannock resident and perennial winner of the coveted Eva B. Smith award for the first county runner in the Fodderstack Classic, was second in 43:44. Third was William Baker in 47:09.
As in the men's open division, it was an out-of-thecounty contestant who took first among women runners with a Rappahannock woman second. Laura Maher finished in 52:29, followed by RCHS track and cross country coach Ann Spieker in 58:57 and Judy Beattie in 59:08.
Missing from the ranks of runners were upper classmen from the county high school’s cross country contingent who had promised to give the “old folks” some tough competition. Unfortunately, College Boards we;e held the same day and those examinations so critical to college acceptance took priority over Turkey Ridge.
The younger RCHS team members who showed up all took high honors, however. Maria Roemer, first in the 14 and under division for girls, covered the course in 70:47. A crowd favorite in that group was six-year-old Caroline Jackson who completed 2'/i miles and then finished the rest in back of a pick-up truck.
