The grass filter strips are buffers to absorb chemicals from water runoff before it enters the streams. Used along the banks of waterways, grass, fescue and clover can trap soil particles and protect against scour and erosion as well as filtering out fertilizers, pesticides and micorganisms that would otherwise pollute the water.
In addition, the vegetative cover offers food and travelways for wildlife that live along the streams. The end result, conservationists say, is a more stable environment and a more attractive landscape.
