Certifiable Miracle
The story of the center’s first certifiable miracle illustrates how the system works. She was an adult female redtail hawk that had been shot between the wrist and elbow of her wing. “She was taken to the Charlottesville SPCA. It was the year before we opened. They put her in a cage. They knew what to feed her but not how to treat her wounds. They managed to keep her alive but they didn’t splint her wing,” Clarke said. “They were scared to go in the cage with her. The bones healed at a 90 degree angle. Her wing was horribly deformed: she couldn’t fly.”
After the center announced its opening, several area SPCA’s, including the group in Charlottesville, sent their wild animals. The crippled red tail was one of the new patients. “She was
