Dr. Partridge went into the old injury, dismantled the bone, removed the deformation and put in the pin. “The wing healed straight but she hadn’t flown in two years. We had to teach her to fly. We had to rebuild her muscles and get her into top shape,” Clarke said.

Four months of constant rehabilitation began. First the hawk was flown on a short tether. “We were running with the bird on a leash and we realized that we were the only ones getting any exercise,” Clarke recalled. “So we tried her on a surf fishing reel with a 30 pound test line. She could flyout 100 yards and we didn’t even break a sweat.”

The hawk improved and on the past July 4th weekend, the center’s workers decided she was ready to fly alone. “She’d been a caged cripple for two and a half years. It seemed an appropriate time to restore her independence,” Sheffield added.
