Then this boy in the back — obviously the tough guy. the macho leader of the group — announced that they didn’t mess with the kid stuff, that they had rifles and shotguns. They all just grinned when I asked how many of them had ever shot a bird for fun and how many had ever tried to imagine how the bird felt.”
Despite the cool response, Clarke went on w ith his slide show and as the finale, introduced R.T., his red tail hawk traveling companion and assistant, a bird permanently crippled by a hunter's shot and unable to be returned to the wild.
“A few months later. 1 was back in the same area and this kid came up to me, asking if I remembered him. It was the boy from the back of that classroom. He announced that he hadn’t shot a bird since that day, that he never would again and that he'd told his uncles and brothers they ought to stop too! And he asked me how ITT. w as doing.
"That makes it all worth while,” Clarke continued. “When you know you've reached somebody, that someone has heard what you're trying to say."
Money, Money, Money
The educational effort is half of Kd Clark's job. The other half is fund raising. The center receives no government support at all, either from state or federal sources. “We hoped to get help from the Game Commission but while they’re behind w hat we’re doing, they see us as a veterinary program primarily, dealing with individual animals, while their prime concern is endangered species, not endangered individuals.” Clarke explained.
