math and two lab science credits at any level plus an extra credit to be chosen from math or science. In some cases, Chappell said, some of the vocational education sequences at Piedmont Technical could substitute for the extra math or science credit. Although it would be “mathmatically possible” for 20 and 22 credit students to study a two year program at Piedmont, Chappell said it will pose scheduling difficulties.
However, Chappell pointed out that the 20 credit program still leaves a lot of flexibility through the six electives. As an example, Chappell pointed out a transfer student who is completing French V this year through independent study in the small French III class. This sort of individual scheduling will continue to be encouraged.
Chappell pointed out that the two math credits required in the new 20 credit program are the same as Rappahannock currently requires although the state calls for only one. Individual school systems may always have tougher standards than the state’s minimum, he said. For example, some schools require algebra of all graduating seniors, according to Chappell.
Starting with this year’s 8th grade class, all graduates must have “computer literacy” under the new state requirements, Chappell added, giving a nod to the RCHS Boosters Club.
