present 9th graders have the option of three types: the present 18 credit diploma, the new 20 credit diploma and the new 22 credit diploma. The 20 credit diploma is affixed with a state board of education seal for students with a “B” average or better. The “B” average or better students in the 22 credit program receive a governor’s seal on their diplomas.
Chappell said it will up to the county School Board to decide whether the “B” average may include grades below a “C” if there are enough “A’s” to balance them or whether the grades must all be “C” or better. The special diplomas start with the Class of’86.
The present 9th graders are the last class able to graduate under the present 18 credit system. The new programs allow fewer electives because they require more math and science. In addition, the 22 credit diploma requires three credits of one foreign language or four of two different languages. Chappell pointed out that both plans could be considered college “prep” and that “it w’ould be a shame to push the 22 credit diploma exclusively.” The 22 credit program would be recommended for students hoping to enter universities with more stringent language entrance requirements, he added, giving the University of Virginia and Harvard as tw'o examples.
The 22 credit program requires three credits in math to be taken in algebra I or higher, also three lab science credits: earth, biology, chemistry or physics. The 20 credit plan requires two
