Their record is 5-6 in the district and 6-8 overall, and before the game Monday night RCHS’a girls’ vanity basketball coach was hoping that his team would do better. Coach Greg Waters’ hopes were realized as his team won the game against Luray by a score of49-44.
Karen Jordan led the scoring for Rappahannock with a total of 23 points. Natalie Butler and Connie Compton each contributed nine points to the win.
Before the game, Waters had expressed concern that the team had not been able to play consistently weD and together for an entire game. “We play well a couple of quarters, and then we mess up,” Waters said.
The key to the team’s Monday night win according to Waters was the stall {day used during the remaining minutes of the game. “We’ve been practicing that play since we usually lose our lead, and tonight it worked,” Waters said.
The varsity game followed a Rappahannock junior varsity 22-30 loss to Luray. The junior varsity’s record for the season so fur is 2-9 in the district, and 2-12 overall.
“Tonight we took too long to get started since we didn’t start doing what we wanted until the second quarter,” said Coach Carol NowakoskL “There are certain parts of the game that we haven’t gotten down yet, and I don’t know if we will get them before the end of the season.”
Nowakoski said that the team has improved since last year, and that there is improvement every game. “We are able to pull from behind, but we cant seem to hold on to win it in the end,” Nowakoski said.
Tracy Sutphin was the high scorer for Rappahannock’s junior varsity with eight points. Kristi Pendleton scored five poults, and Rolands Cook scored four points during the game.
The next home game for the teams will be on October 23 against George Mason.
