And so the age issue has come out of the closet, and it could become the most crucial issue of the campaign. The unthinkable and unaskable question is being asked. Is Reagan physically and mentally up to serving until he is 78 years old in the most demanding job on Earth?
How much of an issue this may become in the weeks ahead gives a new and unhappy twist to the campaign. The president may simply have had a bad night. Or it may be, sadly, that without his cue-cards and teleprompters his powerful presence is beginning to Cade, or may already have faded more than we know.
If, in the next three weeks, the latter is perceived to be the case, many thoughtful Reagan loyalists will face an unprecedented crisis of choice in this election year.
In any event, Virginians, along with the rest of the world, will be watching the second debate on Oct. 21 with more then mere partisan interest in the outcome.
