More than 100 Rappahannock residents, including students from three county schools, turned out Monday morning to see Senator John Warner (R) and French Slaughter (R), candidate for the 7th Congressional District seat to be vacated by J. Kenneth Robinson (R) following this term.
The candidates’ stop in Washington was one of many Senator Warner made this week throughout Virginia. Both candidates spoke, and spent more than an hour in town.
Addressing the students, Senator Warner said he hoped that service in the armed forces would continue to be vbhmtary. He said that when the Reagan Administration took office in 1980, less men and women were willing to stay in the military. He said that high retention in the armed forces today was the result of a stronger military under the current administration.
"No nation on this earth ever maintained peace through a policy of weakness,” the senator said. He asked students to “be proud of America,” and to finish their educations. He told the
