If entries and ticket sales are good indicators, Saturday’s inaugural meet of Virginia’s newest steeplechase course, Great Meadow, should be spectacular.
Seventy-nine horses have been entered for the Great Meadow Races at the new course near The Plains, an indication that horsemen are supporting the new meet. At the sales oflk» all reserved rail tickets for the races sold out more than a week before the event, promising there will also be a lot of spectators to support the meet.
“I think it is going to go rather well, I really do,” said Bill Myzk, racing secretary for Great Meadow. “It is all very well organized and we have tried to pay particular attention to everyone’s needs from horsemen to spectators.
“The only thing we need is good weather. If we have a sunny day it is going to be fantastic.”
Foremost on the list of preparations for the meet has been the race course which is in excellent condition, according to Mr. Myzk.
“Zeke Ferguson, who is on the board of stewards of the NSHA (National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, the sanctioning body for steeplechasing in this country), has approved the course,” Mr. Myzk said. “He walked the course earlier in the week and examined it in very dose detail.”
