“I want you to know where I stand,” Democratic candidate for the 7th District congressional seat Lewis M. Costello told some 60 supporters October 9 during a fund-raiser at Panorama. “As we develop the record of my opponent over the next four weeks,...it’s gonna get tough, it’s gonna get nasty, it’s gonna get sill out of whack.”
Costello said that his record on a few key issues had not been kept straight by some members of the press. He also said that his record had been muddied flirther by an ad campaign Republican opponent French Slaughter launched in an attempt to align Costello with Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neill. “Tip O’Neill won’t be on the ballot this fell...I will be there,"Costello said.
“I won’t show the speaker of the house any greater deference than the president,” he added, restating an earlier campaign promise to vote with President Reagan when he’s “right” and vote against him when he’s “wrong.” Costello added that Speaker O'Neill was not his choice for the post anyhow. He said he would support Congressman Jim Wright (D-Tex.) for the position.
