This year, of course, there is also the senatorial race between incumbent Republican John Warner and his Democratic challenger, former Del. Edythe Harrison of Norfolk. Harrison, although a national Democrat, is conducting a largely independent campaign with respect to issues.
But generally speaking, the congressional candidates have tried to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the more liberal national ticket. Neither Mondale nor his vice presidential running mate, Geraldine Ferraro, has been invited into the state by any of the congressional hopefuls to join them on the stump.
For the Democrats, however, the outcome of the first debate has, at least, made it a little less necessary for the congressional candidates to act as if they never heard of their party’s presidential ticket. Indeed, given the shifts in sentiment since the debate which appear to be continuing, it is probable that the congressional strategists are taking serious second looks at possible ways to capitalize on them.
