Landfill
(Continued from Page 1) and we know that you folks are equally concerned about the source of water for the Town of Washington,’* said Price.
Price was referring to an ordinance proposed by the Council that would require the registration and approval of sewage disposal systems to prevent any pollution of the town’s water supply. The Council is still working on that proposed ordinance.
Lyt Wood presented information on the proposed site, and on alternate sites for the landfill. Wood questioned the Board of Supervisors’decision that it is an asset to have the landfill near a population center like the Town of Washington, and he asked the Council to make a decision about whether or not the town would want such a service.
Wood also listed other concerns of the group as being the possible impact that the landfill could have on wildlife and on the surrounding neighborhood. A public hearing before the County Planning Commission to discuss the landfill and its relation to the county’s comprehensive plan is planned. “Basically what the comprehensive (dan deals with in assessing any sort of potential development or project such as this is does this proposed project conflict with current land use and the existing character of the neighborhood, and in order to determine this I would invite you to take a tour of the area,” said Wood.
Price said that the group had learned recently that part of the county’s plan is to abandon the use of dumpsters and have citizens bring their own garbage to the landfill. "It is difficult for us to picture the people of this county driving from the farthermost points of the county into a central landfill, and to do that consistently,” Price said. "If that happens, we’re going to hgve a tremendous amount of trafficmi the roads back there.” Richard Latham, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said in a telephone interview that the Board had discussed the possibility of abandoning the dumpsters, but that no decision had been made.
