It’s a lack of patience1 that often leads hunters on a wild-goose chase, Bobby noted. Rather, Bobby said he would stay put and stay serious. “1 keep my mind on my business. I listen to every leaf, every sound. If you do that, you don’t have time to think about anything else,” he said.
This was James’ second year out, and he was packing a 280 his dad got him just before hunting season began last year. “I hope to see him get (a buck),” Bobby said, noting that his son’s pleasure was the most important thing to him on the first day out. “Fm gonna be hunting on my own next week,” he added, noting that he’d have plenty of time to work on his own limit.
Safety Conies First
Most important Of afl, Bobby said, was safety.’ It was the first lesson he’d learned from his grandfather and the first thing he’d taught his son. “Don’t raise (the gun) till you See what ybu’re shooting at,” Bobby cautioned. “Keep the safety on until the gun is raised.” , • >
Bobby said he had learned not to raise the rifle while deer hunting until he saw horns. “Deer aren’t legal anyway until you see horn visible above the hairline,” he noted.
Bobby said he saw no reason for anyone to mistake another person for a deer or a turkey or anything else. “People don’t look like deer. And they don’t look like turkey,” he said. “Safety is more important to me than anythingeise.”
Bobby recalled the time he learned firsthand the potential danger of hunting. “I came out of some pine thicket and a man was pointing a gun right at me,” he remembered clearly as if the incident had just happened. “It’s stuck with me ever since then. It burns in my
