To the editor:
As a member of the Concerned Citizens of Rappahannock County, I feel an obligation to voice my concerns in regard to the proposed landfill. I want to make clear first that I realize the need for a landfill and secondly, I fully understand the dilemma of finding a proper site for such a project. A landfill is an unwelcome prospect in any area and finding an “appropriate” place for it a difficult task. Understandably, informing a landowner that a landfill site will be in close proximity to his/her own neighborhood is an extremely delicate situation. However, this does not justify the grossly inadequate way the Board of Supervisors has handled this issue thus far.
I cannot perceive the reasoning behind the negative and deceptive course the Board chose to take and can only hope they abandon this pointless effort of concealment soon, and enable the residents of Rappahannock County the chance to work along with the Board towards an amiable solution to this landfill issue.
One would hope that the prosposed public hearing requested by the Board to the Planning Commission is a sign that they are adopting a more positive and open approach to this issue by finally allowing the opportunity for vital public input.
