fi. The site, according to federal, state and local officials—and that is obvious even to a casual observer—has extraordinary and unique environmental values for the county. It is bordered by the Covington and Rush Rivers and is a natural habitat for a wide variety of wildlife from deer to turkey, osprey, blue heron, beavers, and many other animals. The construction and operation of the landfill will disturb or destroy these habitats. In addition, the t landfill will get many hazardous wastes—highly toxic pesticides, used oil, paints, etc.—that will inevitably (sillute the Covington and Rush, the groundwater, nearby drinking water wells, and one of the county’s largest ponds. Landfills should never be located in such environmentally sensitive areas.
We know the decision on the landfill is not easy. We are working with a large group of concerned citizens to present other alternatives or options that are available and better. But the condemnation power is the most drastic power of government. It should be exercised, if at all, only with the precision of a surgeon’s knife, not a cannon. Your use of that power in this case Would be unwise and unfair because of the massive consequences it will have on the community you have chosen to affect. For us, as well as for dozens of other families within a short distance of the proposed site, your decision, if implemented, will literally wreck our dreams, damage our economic-security, and destroy what it has taken us a long time to plan and build.
We don’t believe you want to do that. We urge you to reconsider your decision and abandon this senseless location without delay. Let us avoid the costs, emotion, and bitterness that are sure to ensue the longer the struggle continues.
