The Return of Martin Guerre
This weekend’s RAAC movie, The Return of Martin Guerre received three French Academy Awards and has been acclaimed by American reviewers nationwide. In rural 16th century France, a man, played by Gerard Depardieu, arrives in a village claiming to be the long-lost husband of a wealthy woman; she accepts him, but her relatives believe him to be an imposter. The film is based on a true story of which there are written records as well as a rich oral history in the village of Artigat, where the basic conflict of love and law is still argued, fresh in the minds of the community.
