Just how the legislators resolve this interesting dilemma will be one of the more engaging political exercises of the session. There will be a cluster of bills and Appropriations Bill line items related to corrections. All of them will bear watching.
The issue of uranium mining in the state will once again be centerstage. After several years of study, the lawmakers are deeply divided over whether or not to lift a moratorium on the mining which is scheduled to expire July 1. A decision to mine the uranium would commit the taxpayers of the state to the expense of safeguarding mounds of residue from the mines which would remain radioactive for thousands of years. In spite of a proposed set of tough safeguards regulating the mining, the longterm implications of the project are, wisely we think, giving the lawmakers pause. This legislation should be watched especially closely.
