On the basis of their high scores on the 1984 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test, 15 Wakefield School juniofs will receive National Merit honors in 1985.
The scores of the 15 students placed them in the top 5 per cent of the over one million juniors throughout the nation who took the qualifying test last October.
Six of the juniors; Elise Maar, William Meuse, Tara Welty, Meera Maheswaran, Larry Tarr and Jeffrey Vail, scored in the top one per cent of college-bound juniors in the nation. Two others, Lorraine Shea and Sau Chan, scored in the top two per cent. The board was told that the identification process of gifted and talented students has begun, and that materials are in for a parent workshop on gifted and talented children. The board was also advised that about 15 teachers are taking a course in how to teach gifted and talented students.
The next School Board meeting will be February 12.
