In general, the country boys see it as a matter of the long term restoration of their roads, many of which have deteriorated badly. The city boys see it as a matter of immediate political survival.
Scores of other issues will, of course, be raised as the lawmakers work their way through the nearly 1,700 bills and resolutions which will lik :ly be dropped in the hopper before the Jan. 22 cutoff date for the introduction of new legislation. Among them will be such vital matters as a Bill of Rights for the handicapped, upgrading education, dealing with acid rain, the disposal of hazardous waste and pay raises for state employees.
It will be, as they say, a full plate. And in this election year, every legislator will be carefully weighing the impact next November of the way he presses the “yea” or “nay” button on his desk in January.
