Bland Contest Shows Off Talent
The Bland Music Contest, sponsored by the Rappahannock Lions Club, featured talented students in both the vocal and instrumental categories as well as in the new, country ballad category.
First place in vocals went to Tara Beth Fisher. First, second and third runners up in that category were as follows: James Robert Freeman, Jr., Aney Melissa Massie, and in a tie for third were James and Jon McCullough.
First place in the instrumental category went to David Bruce Fisher, with first, second and third runners up as follows: Leslie Carol Nichols, Ann Deirdre Salmon, and Doretha H. Butler.
Performances were also given by Donna Felisha Williams, Betty Jane Kidwell, and Kenneth Lee Baldwin who was the first student to compete in the country ballad category. He received a $25 savings bond.
Winners in each category received a $75 savings bond. First and second runners up received $50 and $25 savings bonds, with $15 cash awarded to the third runners up.
The winners will compete in the Lions region IV Contest Sunday, March 17 at 2:00 p.m in the Culpeper High School.
• Sperryville Business Council
The Sperryville Business Council held a reorganizational meeting February 20 at Faith Mountain Herbs and Antiques. The following people were elected as officers of the council: Jimmy Swindler, president; Eric Kvames, vice president; Martha O’Bannon, secretary; Cherry Woodard, treasurer.
The council’s objective is to publicise and promote businesses in the historic Town of Sperryville _/
Representatives from businesses in the immediate Sperryville area
encouraged to attend the next meeting at Faith Mountain H6fbs and
itiques on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Garden Club Grants
This year the Rappahannock County Garden Club will once again offer the Frances J. Leonard Memorial Scholarship Grants to graduating seniors of Rappahannock County for the purpose of continuing their education.
One grant in the amount of $1,500 will be given as well as two grants for $500 each.
Applications for grants are available at the Guidance Department in the high school. All applications must be returned to the Guidance Department by April 1.
