The proceeds from the annual Rappahannock Woman’s Club’s fashion show to be held on March 24 will be used this year for the club’s scholarship fund and the Women’s Abuse Shelter (WAS) in Culpeper.
The Women’s Abuse Shelter is a volunteer, non-profit organization that has been in existence since 1980. The purpose of the shelter is to provide assistance to victims of domestic violence in Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Madison and Rappahannock counties.
Battered women are the main concern for the group, but the WAS will take calls from battered men. Deborah Simmons, publicity chairman for the shelter, said that the latest figures indicate that the majority of victims of battering cases are women so that it is logical that the organization focuses more on helping women.
