The following letter has been sent to the Religious Freedom Alert in Washington, D.C.:
In a small Virginia county not far from Washington, zoning changes are being planned which could have an adverse effect on local churches and religion in general. Hoping for a speedy passage without much opposition of their 1984 Draft Plan that rewrites the county’s zoning ordinance, according to a letter written to the Planning Commission by a Board of Zoning Appeals official, the planners were surprised to have a turn out of some 400 angry religionists at their obligatory open hearing.
Impromptu speeches against a provision that stipulated that places of worship would need a special use permit for any new construction or remodeling, which would give the BZA an apparent unconstitutional authority over the practice of religion, were made far into the night, with only one citizen (a lawyer) speaking in favor of the plan.
