Gov. Chuck Robb is spearheading an endeavor which amounts to nothing less than an effort to save the national Democratic Party from itself.
Robb is taking the lead in organizing a group within the party structure which is being tentatively called the Democratic Leadership Council. Sharing the initiative with the governor in the formation of the council are Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia and Congressman Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri. Other likeminded party loyalists around the country are being invited to sign on.
The council’s purpose is to neutralize the growing balkanization within the Democratic Party. As a national political force, the party is being increasingly perceived as little more than a loose confederation of its various constituent groups.
