Rappahannock High School’s eighth grade basketball team finished the year with a 0-2 record, and Coach Ron Vickers was pleased with how the team developed through the season.
“The first game we lost to Stonewall just because we weren’t prepared mentally,” Vickers said. “After that game, though, the boys settled down and began playing like a team.” The team won its next two games by two points over Strasburg and Page.
Vickers explained that in the game with Page, the team showed stamina when the members worked together with two seconds left on the clock to get a pass inbounds to point guard Eric Dunn who made a 40 foot jumper at the buzzer. Dunn was also the high scorer of the game with 14 points.
The team’s only other loss came in the next game with Stonewall Jackson. “Two of my big scorers, Doug Smith and Wesley Jenkins, were out that game due to illnesses,” Vickers said. “That hurt us.”
The two high scorers for the season were Eric Dunn with 80 points and Doug Smith with 71 points. Since the eighth grade basketball season is over, Smith and Dunn have begun practicing
