The Owls tried to contain the Saint’s big men with a zone defense, but the Saints continued to get good shots in the paint. The Saints went on to win 41-53.
The next night the Owls traveled to Emmanuel School outside Manassas. The. Emmanuel Flames were the first ever victims of the Wakefield Owls.
With a new offensive set and a pressing 3-2 defense, the Owls tallied 74 points on mostly forced turnovers to Emmanuel’s 25 points.
With new confidence, the Owls entered Thursday night’s match with conference leader Word of Life with hopes of an upset. In first quarter play, the Owls were able to stay close with Word of Life-leading by a single point at the end of the quarter, 19-18. But, as Word of Life began to pick up the tempo and fast break, they increased their lead to 40-31 at the half.
Following the half, Word of Life continued to run and gun but was not able to ever completely pull away from the Owls. The Owls exchanged baskets with Word of Life for most of the half until they had to send Word of Life to foul line in desperation. Word of Life went on to nail down a 71-87 victory.
To close out the week, Emmanuel visited Wakefield for a rematch. The outcome was much the same as the earlier game with the Owls winning, 7725.
