The week of February 19-25 has proved to be a turning point for the Wakefield School basketball team. The Owls claimed their first two victories ever and played close home matches against St. James of Hagerstown and Word of Life School.
The week started with Wakefield playing host to the St. James Saints. The Saints were the obvious favorite, especially since Wakefield’s leading scorer, Russell Rowzie, was absent from the line-up. With adequate practice time on Wakefield’s new court, though, the Owls were well prepared.
The Owls were hot in the ‘first quarter as they raced to a lt>-<5 lead. By half-time, the Saints had narrowed the margin to five points at 2G-21 with a patient offense and good perimeter shooting. In the second half, the Saints began to work the ball into the paint on the undersized Owls.
