Superintendent of schools Robert Estabrook will propose next year’s budget Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the elementary school, and we are happy to have learned from Mr. Estabrook himself that he plans to recommend a “significant increase” in salary for all teachers.
Both Mr. Estabrook and School Board Chairman Beverly Massie acknowledged in interviews that Rappahannock’s teachers need to be paid more. When asked if he thought the supervisors would accept his recommendation, Mr. Estabrook replied with a firm “I hope so.”
On the topic of teachers’ salaries, Mrs. Massie said, “I’ll be the first to admit that we need to pay our teachers more.”
Neither one of these two school officials - Estabrook or Massie -- disagrees in spirit with members of the local teacher-parent organizations, namely the Rappahannock Education Association, or the recently founded Concerned Citizens for Better Education.
