Most oi the women who call are married, but “we assist abused women, not .just victims of spouse abuse,” Saunders said. The WSA volunteers counsel the victims and help them to understand all of their alternatives.
Beginning a year ago, married victims can now have a spousal abuse petition issued by the court that provides a protection order and can be used to force the batterer into therapy. “The petition is an excellent tool since it’s easier for women to do than to have an arrest warrant issued,” Simmons said. The WAS refers the batterers to a mental health office or to private counseling if that is preferred.
The WAS is affiliated with the United Way, and it depends on volunteers and generous community support to operate. “We are very excited about the fashion show since we need help to operate, and it’s nice that the Woman’s Club thought of us, ” Simmons said.
