Drunk driving week

Gov. Charles Robb has proclaimed December 15-21 as Virginia Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Week in conjunction with the national observance.

With a theme “Because We Care” the statewide week will focus on what Virginias can do to prevent alcohol-related deaths and injuries. Each year more than 300 people die in Virginia alcohol-related crashes. The Governor is urging “responsible behavior to decrease senseless death and injury on our highways.”

Local communities are encouraged to develop programs and events with emphasis on the critical dangers of mixing drugs and driving, according to John T. Hanna, deputy commissioner, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

“Drinking and driving is the cause of the most frequently committed violent crime in most communities,” Hanna said. “We heed to take away from drinking drivers the social acceptability they have enjoyed, and let them know this irresponsible behavior is no longer accepted in Virginia.”

Programs Hanna recommends to communities include: encouraging citizens to report suspicious driving to police; urging individuals to make prior arrangements to ride home with someone who is not drinking; establishing dial-a-ride programs to offer free rides to drinking drivers; and initiating special law enforcement patrols to apprehend drinking and drugged drivers.
