Fire completely destroyed
the home of Arthur Smoot on Monday night. The family had left the 5-room home, located on the Fodderstack road at the Resettlement, when the terrific wind-storm of the day had blown away the roof from the henhouse and bam. Mr. Smoot and his wife and two children became frightened and decided to leave their home where the windstorm seemed so fierce to go to the home of his brother nearby. By the time they had arrived at the home of his brother, flames could be seen at their own house.
Winds that reached 50- and 60- mile gales ripped through the county all day Monday, tearing down trees, breaking telephone and power lines, and frightening those who tried to travel and those who stayed in-doors. Most of the county was without electric power from about 10 o’clock in the morning to 4 in the afternoon and the telephones were out most of the day.
The Home Decoration Contest will be put on again this Christmas in the town of Washington. The object this year, still emphasizing safety in decoration at the Christmas season, is to have every home in the county decorated for the holiday.
