The week of December 1-7 has been designated as National Home Care Week in recognition of nurses, therapists, companions, and aides who provide health and personal care to homebound and recuperating patients.
FamilyCare Home Care Services, a subsidiary of Culpeper Memorial Hospital, has been providing home health services to the fivecounty area for three years.
“We have seen a dramatic increase in the need for our services since we opened,” says Vivian Dennis, director of FamilyCare, “because Medicare restrictions have shortened hospital stays, ^pd scattered families are not able to care for sick relatives. We have spent this year expanding and fine-tuning our services.”
FamilyCare began a two-way voice communication system in January 1985. Purchased by the Auxiliary’s 1984 Lights of Love, Communi-Call units are now in use from Burr Hill to Washington. People who live alone use this service to have someone to call for emergency assistance. The operators who receive clients’ calls keep the line open until assistance arrives while they make whatever calls the clients need for help.
Added to the FamilyCare staff this year is a social worker who assesses clients’ individual needs and puts the clients in touch with local social service organizations and health departments that can assist them with special services.
