Delayed Retirement
If Rappahannock residents delay retiring or return to work after starting to receive Social Security checks, their additional earnings may result in higher Social Security benefits, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper said recently. Social Security will automatically refigure your benefit after their additional earnings are credited to your record.
A worker will receive delayed retirement credits, which are an increase in Social Security benefits of 3 percent for each year from age 66 to 70 that he did not get benefits because of work. The worker’s additional credit would also increase payments to widows and widowers if he died.
For workers who reach age 66 in 1990 or later the delayed retirement credit will be increased gradually until it reaches 8 percent each year.
