As a party host or hostess during the holiday season, you can plan safe alternatives for both drinking and driving guests without inhibiting the life of the party.
These safety tips can help insure that your party doesn’t end in tragedy:
— Use alcohol as an accompaniment to social activities, not the main focus. Avoid pressuring guests to drink.
— Have nonalcoholic beverage available. Some people do not drink alcohol.
— Serve high protein foods like cheese, meat and eggs before and during drinking. They slow down the stomach’s alcohol absorption rate.
— Use standard measures when mixing drinks: jiggers or one-ounce bottle spouts.
— Serve mixed drinks or spiked punches with a noncarbonated base like fruit juice or tea. Alcohol is absorbed faster when carbonated.
— If a guest drinks too much, start a conversation to slow down the drinking; offer food or suggest a nonalcoholic drink
— Stop serving alcohol about an hour before the party is over, allowing guests more time for their bodies to get rid of the alcohol they have consumed.
— Remember, neither coffee or cold showers can sober up anyone. Only time can lower a person’s blood alcohol concentraction.(BAC).
Despite even the best planned party there may be guests who do drink too much and insist on driving home.
“If this happens, take charge and don’t give in,” advises John T. Hanna, deputy commissioner, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. “You may lose a friend that night, but you will have a better friend in the morning.”
The following are some standard drinking driving intervention procedures, but don’t just limit your actions to these:
— Drive your guest home or ask another sober person to provide a ride.
