As the National Guard cannons boom their salute, Gerald Lee Babies will be sworn into office as governor of the commonwealth at high noon on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The inauguration will be carried out with all the pomp and ceremony which traditionally accompany such mementous events in the Old Dominion.
A few mo.r.°nts before, Lt. Gov. L. Douglas Wilder and Attorney General Mary Sue Terry will have taken their oaths of office.
Like Gov. Charles S. Robb’s oath-taking in 1982, a spokesman for the Inaugural Committee says the 1986 ceremony will likely be held on the north side of the Capitol Building. Prior to Robb, state officials had been installed on the far more picturesque south portico. Visitors, however, were packed into crowded bleachers with almost no view of the events from the Capitol grounds.
But the coming formalities aside, what is known so far about this new Administration which is about to take office in Richmond?
In the weeks before the Inauguration the shape and style of the Baliles regime will, of course, emerge with much greater clarity. Cabinet appointments will be made and top level staff positions in the governor’s office will be filled.
