Drinking age:
— Virginia’s legal drinking age is 21 for the purchase and consumption of wine, distilled spirits and beer. Exception: Anyone age 19 by July 1, 1985, may continue to purchase or drink beer.
Driving under the influence (DUI):
— Virginia law presumes a driver to be under the influence of alcohol when the blood alcohol content (BAC) reaches .10 percent, however, impairment occurs well before reaching that level. Drivers with a. 15 percent or greater may be convicted of DUI without further evidence. Drivers arrested with a BAC below . 10 percent may still be convicted, with additional evidence of intoxications due to alcohol or other drugs.

— Mandatory six-month loss of driver’s license without referral to Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP).
— Possible jail sentence up to one year.
