but he said local residents have recently begun to show an interest in the furniture. “Sometimes the tourists point the way to something in your own backyard,” Tom said.
He said winter is usually a cabinet maker’s best season for sales since people are indoors more and start to notice furniture needs. He is planning to expand his market more by including mail orders, but he does not want the business to grow too large.
“We just expanded our shop area so that I could have five people working,” Tom said. “I enjoy building the furniture, though, and I want to keep it a cottage industry so it doesn’t begin to feel like a factory. I don’t want the furniture mass produced.”
