Also being requested is new carpeting and a ceiling. The jury room is also in need of soundproofing.
Mr. Luke urged the Board to consider the issue as soon as possible. He said that in certain jurisdictions, including Loudon County, judges have issued orders to other Boards of Supervisors to bring their courthouses to an appropriate standard.
There was also discussion on whether to try and find a contractor who could do the entire job or award the various components of renovation to individual contractors. It was noted that the former approach would require a Class A contractor,
while the latter would possibly result in the work being done by local contractors (who generally have a a business too small for Class A status).
Members of the Board were also concerned with the expense of the project. They plan to contact an architect in order to advertise for bids properly.
