Originally there were 13 cabins and President Hoover used his camp as a “weekend White House*’ and with his wife Lou Henry entertained VIPs from Washington as well .as dignitaries from abroad.
After President Hoover left office in 1933 he donated the cabins to the National Park Service and they became part of the Shenandoah National Park upon its official dedication in 1936. The Boy Scouts of America also used Hoover’s camp and signed a 20-year lease with the Park Service. The Scouts’ tenure ended in 1958.
Of the original 13 buildings of Hoover’s Camp, three were restored and are currently maintained by the Park Service. They are rented to visiting dignitaries and government officials as stipulated by President Hoover.
During Shenandoah National Park’s 50th anniversary this year, other special events will also be held, sponsored by the National Park Service, Shenandoah Natural History Association and ARA Virginia Skyline Company:
• August 15 & 16: Barn-yard festival and craft days — Skyland. Displays and demonstrations by local craftsmen.
