The Bluemont Concert Series will present an Evening of the Blues with blues artists John Jackson, Eleanor Ellis and Flora Molton in concert on Saturday, August 16, at 7:60 p.m. on the lawn of the Warren Green Hotel in downtown Warrenton. Requested donation is $1 per person.
An Evening of the Blues will be a very special performance by three of the world’s great blues musicians. John Jackson is one of the country's great rural blues guitarists and singers. He was born and raised in Rappahannock County, where he began playing guitar as soon as he was big enough to hold one. A largely selftaught musician, John was “discovered” in the early 1960s and his musical career has grown steadily since, leading to performances at major festivals and concerts all over the United States.
Flora Molton began playing music in the early 1920s at Saturday night gatherings in Louisa County, playing slide with a butter knife on a dollar guitar. She moved to Washington, D. C., in the 1940s and has been a regular street performer there for 40 years, also appearing at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and other music festivals. Flora likes to recall a special private performance she gave for the rock group the Rolling Stones. She is a moving and powerful singer of oldtime gospel music and songs she’s written from her life experiences, accompanying herself with the “lonesome sound” of her slide guitar..
Eleanor Ellis was born in New Orleans and grew up in Tangipahoa Parish where she was exposed to jazz and blues throughout her early years. She worked at the Jazz Archive and the Jazz Museum in New Orleans and played the blues, developing a personal style through the many musical influences in LouiCall
