youngsters. “Parents are more aware, and dental care has improved quite a bit,” Mrs. Thornton said.
“Frances always had such an interest in everybody, regardless,” noted Mrs. Quaintance. “She was always so ready and willing to go anywhere to help anybody, and many times she would have to blaze her own trails.”
Those characteristics led to the perception of Frances Thornton as THE health department, not just the public health nurse. Dr. LeGarde tells a story to illustrate that point. “When I first went over to Rappahannock, she introduced me to the Board of Supervisors. I told them I was proud to be the new director of the Thornton Health Department, and she was so embarrassed she could have killed me!” the doctor said, chuckling at the memory. “I feel sorry for whoever replaces her,” he continued. “That person will be trying to fill shoes too big for anyone.”
“I’m the only nurse that’s been here in Rappahannock, so I can’t blame mistakes on anyone else,” said Mrs. Thornton with characteristic modesty. “I had a job, and I tried to doit.”
