There will be Hanover County melons in Richmond stores and Halifax County melons at many other Virginia food outlets, despite the drought, reports Virginia Tech horticulturist Charlie O’Dell.
“The drought is making us nervous,” admitted O’Dell, an Extension project leader for commercial vegetable production who just returned from a tour of new enterprise crops in southside Virginia. “But it’s not as bad as you might think.”
“Halifax area farmers are shipping melons like mad all over the state through major chains,” he said. Richmond-area consumers purchase all of Hanover County’s melons.
