Congressman D. French Slaughter, Jr. (R-7th) reported that recent developments have made it apparent that Congress will have to reduce government spending for government operations below the levels that were considered sufficient when the Budget Act was passed earlier this year if the Congress is to meet the deficit reduction targets required by Gramm/Rudman.
This is because spending and revenue estimates have been too optimistic. In fact, it appears that Congress may still miss this target by estimates ranging from $11 billion to $25 billion, the Congressman said.
