“The public accepts the transportation of gasoline,” Price says, “because it’s familiar and not as mysterious as nuclear waste. Trucks carrying gasoline ride with their tanks above the axles. If the center of gravity were lower, they wouldn’t roll over as often. But there’s been no public pressure on engineers to change the design of these trucks.”
Besides gasoline, the DOT has classified nearly 20 categories of hazardous materials, including flammable liquids, flammable solids, corrosives, poisons, irritants, and oxidizers (materials that cause other materials to burst into flame). Price feels that contingency planning for the transportation of these substances has been spotty from an engineering standpoint.
