Trip to Bountiful
Trip to Bountiful will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on August 16 and 17. The movie stars Geraldine Page, John Heard, Carlin Glynn and Rebecca DeMomay.
This film version of Horton Foote’s 1953 play stars Geraldine Page, who earned an Academy Award as Best Actress for her portrayal as pensioner Carrie Watts. Feeling stifled in her tiny apartment, and after 15 years of living with a complaining daughter-in-law and a sad, defeated son, Mrs. Watts decides she must visit her childhood hometown, Bountiful. She hops a bus and fulfills her dream. The movie is rated PG.
Reunion scheduled
The families of the late Atha and Brew Burke will hold their annual reunion on Sunday, August 17, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Rappahannock Park, near Washington.
All family members and friends are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day together.
Homecoming at Chester Gap
Chester Gap Baptist Church will be having homecoming services on Sunday, August 17, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by worship at
Fellowship dinner will be held at 1 p.m. Everette Powell, pastor of Shenandoah Farms Baptist Church, will be speaking at 2 p.m. and the Truth Singers from Warrenton will provide special music.
Family reunion planned
A reunion of the families of the late Thurman Wilson and Julia Thorne Wilson will be held August 24 at the Castleton fire hall in Castleton. All relatives and friends are invited to attend and are asked to bring a picnic lunch. The reunion will begin about 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at 1 o’clock.
Youth urged to attend workshop
All local youth are encouraged to attend the workshop to be held Monday, August 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Courthouse in Washington. Sean Smith, 16, a member of the Virginia Beach 4-H Teen Leaders Club, will be the instructor. Sean has been an active 4-H’er for the past seven years, achieving many honors.
During the 1986 Record Book Competition, Sean won first place at the state level for his Achievement Record Book in Leadership and Consumer Education. He will receive a trip to National Congress to be held in Chicago, 111., in November and will compete for a $1,000 college scholarship. Since a 4-H’er can attend Chicago only once and in one area, Sean chose to compete in leadership. During State Congress recently in Blacksburg, Sean assisted Evangeline Swain, 4-H Youth Extension Specialist, in conducting a Record Keeping Workshop.
Herbal weekend
Paul Olko, herbalist and body therapist, will be conducting two workshops at Freeborn Farm in Luray Saturday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The topic will be “Herbal Healing for the Family?”
Sunday, August 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mr. Olko will conduct a course titled “Earth Awareness Through Herbs.”

Historical Society picnic
The Historical Society picnic has been postponed to Friday, September 5, at Caledonia Farm, home of Phil Irwin near Flint Hill.
Courses offered at CCLC
Lord Fairfax Community College will offer three evening courses this fall at the Child Care and Learning Center in Washington. The courses are Introduction to Interior Decorating, which meets on Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Introductory Spanish, which meets on Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m.; and Homesteading, which meets on Mondays from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
